Eugene Forbes, the soldier and the ghost
I know little about Eugene's life outside of the war though I did extensive research on him. He was born around 1820 in Trenton, NJ. I found that he was living with a woman named Anne Forbes in 1850, but her relationship to him is not clearly identified. The ages mean that she could be his mother but the census does not identify her as such. He was a printer and seems pretty well educated. He held the Larzelere family of Trenton in high regard to the point of writing everything in his will to be given to them. Yet, later in time the will is crossed out. His touch with them seems to diminish over time without cryptic sentences. Not to mention the diaries are full of a shorthand that no longer is used. I have been unable to decipher these words. Someday I hope that someone will. There appears that he had some break with family in the middle of the war that he does not explain. Hopefully if someone can ever figure out his shorthand the mystery will be resolved. He gives the impression that at least the matrarch of the Larzelere family was his mother though other genalogist. I have come across with the fact that he was a "Borrowed Boy" meaning he was a type of servant. What is the truth, someday we all may know.
As said earlier, he was very attached to the Larzelere family and they are the ones that ended up with all three diaries, though one seems to be missing.
That diary would have been crucial and I firmly believe it exists. Somebody just do not know what they have. I would hope that book will give the answers I do not know.
